Canoeing the Vltava in Český Krumlov: routes and tips
How to canoe or raft the Vltava in Český Krumlov: the short stretch through town, longer routes from Rožmberk and Vyšší Brod, rentals with transfers and tips.
Paddling down the Vltava is as much a part of Krumlov as the castle. The river flows right through the historic centre, and the stretch around the town is one of the most popular paddling spots in the Czech Republic.
Popular routes
- Through the historic centre – the shortest route, about an hour, with weirs and a view of the castle from the water. Beginners and families can manage it.
- Rožmberk → Český Krumlov – a full-day route through beautiful countryside with several weirs.
- Vyšší Brod → Rožmberk – a calmer stretch for those who want more nature.
- Český Krumlov → Zlatá Koruna – half a day on the water, finishing with a visit to the monastery.
Canoe or raft?
- A raft is stable and suits families and groups of friends.
- A canoe is for those who already know how to paddle.
Rental companies provide the boats, life jackets, waterproof barrels and transfers to the start and back. In season it’s a good idea to book ahead.
When to go
The paddling season runs roughly from April to September. July and August can be busy on the river; June and September are quieter.
Practical tips
- Respect the weirs – each one has a marked boat chute; if you’re unsure, carry the boat round.
- Pack dry clothes in your barrel.
- Keep your phone and documents in a waterproof case.
- Alcohol and the river don’t mix – the person in charge of the boat is subject to the same rules as on the road.
